Democracy In its 2023 analysis of the state of democracy in the world, the V-dem Institute at the University of Gothenburg notes that we have wiped out 35 years of advances in a short space of time. There are rays of hope: both countries and some areas of policy, such as women’s representation and same-sex rights, are showing progress. But there is more bad news than good, and in many countries the rule of law and human rights are being undermined.
